Club News May 2014

The Cricket season has begun! which means most weekends there are matches happening. Fixture Booklets are available in the Clubhouse – ask at the Bar. And our new coach Mark Lane has begun coaching so look out for him.

The Bar – When there is a match, the Bar will be open from about 3pm on Saturdays and 4:30pm on Sundays, as well as the usual Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from about 6:30.

Tennis matches start this week. Notice of matches and therefore evening court usage is on the website and in the Fixture Booklet.

Table Tennis – Come and join us at the next Table Tennis tournament on Tuesday May 6th (it is always the first Tuesday of the month) and play on our new table in the back room at the Clubhouse. And don’t forget there is the permanent outdoor table by the Tennis Pavilion. Bats and balls are kept in the Tennis Pavilion for everyone's use.

Cricket safety nets – At the moment we do not have safety nets between the tennis courts and the cricket pitches. The matches are taking place away from the courts until the new netting and poles gets put up in June. The new high cricket ball-stop fencing will be a high specification modern system which should last the Club many years.

Car parking – As you can see, the willows and low netting offer very little protection from 'flying' cricket balls in the car park when a game is in progress. We must remind you that you always park in the car park at your own risk.

Facebook - A reminder that we have a Facebook page - so you can stay up to date with Club news and events.

The future - Mike Bentley, the Club President, gave a report at the Tennis Wimbledon Draw last week. He talked about changing the constitution of the Club so that it becomes incorporated. This protects the Officers of the Club in the event of the Club being sued. If this goes ahead, it will need an EGM. He also announced that the new General Committee is working to put the Club’s finances in order, including amalgamating all the bank accounts into one club account. Each section has an approved budget, and all monies paid out have to have 2 signatories so that there is control on expenditure. We have changed accountants to a local company (Glazers), who have VAT expertise, which we need as the VAT on our activities is very complex. We are receiving quarterly reports from the accountants, and timing general Committee meetings to be able to review these accounts. Mike also talked about possible future plans; the General Committee are looking at various waysin which we might be able to finance a redevelopment of the Clubhouse. We will be setting up a steering group to examine such projects, and we are particularly looking for lawyers, with experience in property & planning, and architects to help. Is there anybody out there willing to get involved or give some advice? If so, please please contact us.
